London Conference '08

Background

The Dana Centre

The Dana Centre

The Dana Centre is a groundbreaking urban bar and café annexed to the Science Museum in London. It is the UK's only venue for adults to discuss controversial science. Established in November 2003, the Dana Centre is a young and experimental organisation which exists to challenge public perception about science and tackle contemporary issues head on. From stand-up comics debunking science myths to a live heart by-pass operation, as well as debates, art installations and live experiments, this dynamic space brings the hottest themes in modern science to life through a programme of vibrant and innovative events. The Dana Centre is a unique, inspiring and pioneering centre where the public can talk about the impact of science on people and society. The Dana Centre also gives the public the opportunity to set the agenda and air their views on current and future science within an expert, yet non-prescriptive, atmosphere. It is contributing to the vision of a Science Museum in the 21st century as a space for people to discuss contemporary and future science issues.

The Environment Foundation

The mission of the Environment Foundation is to protect and improve the environment. It works in partnership with others to help society understand one of the most critical challenges it faces in the 21st century - the transition from today's unsustainable economic and industrial activities to more sustainable production and consumption patterns. It celebrated its 20th Anniversary with a consultation on 21st Century Values at Work, aimed to take this agenda forward by:

  • Sharing knowledge and experience about values-related activities
  • Looking back at what has been learned over the last 20 years and examining how these lessons can be applied over the next 20 years
  • Outlining the key challenges and responses needed by the crucial agencies
  • Producing a route map to the future

Participants come together as part of an enduring network, with contact and the exchange of ideas sustained into the future through the 21st Century Trust Fellowship.
